First verse
In this verse i would like a few scenes showing how our main character is confident and enjoying life and is ignorant to the effects of his actions. He will stroll down the street and be shown having fun with different women and drinking he will then come home to his wife and their baby who he ignores as he heads straight upstairs.
Pre-Chorus/Chorus/post Chorus
This part of the song will show the woman hiring an investigator to watch her husband and the investigator giving her photographs of her husband with a woman. She throws stuff around and gets really upset, with cuts to the husband happily strolling down the street.
verse 2
In this part of the video the photographs of the husband seeing the other women will be shown placed on top of each other one after the other showing just how many women hes been with behind the back of his wife.
Pre-Chorus 2/Chorus/Post Chorus
This part will be about the husband coming home to find his wife gone, he finds the photos of him with the woman with goodbye written on the back and his guilt and the sudden realization that he doesn't want to lose her, but its too late so he drinks and gets in the car and drives.
Bridge
We see him drive and drive as he drinks and calls his wife and yells into the phone when she doesn't answer. Chorus/Post Chorus
As the song gets close to the end the husband stops by the side of the road and throws bottles at cars that come passed and he slides down his car as he holds his head in his hands, skip to the next scene as he drives towards the edge of a cliff as he gets close he screams and slams his foot onto the pedal as he goes over the edge.
In this essay, I will list the styles, conventions and
techniques of music videos giving examples for each and going in to detail
about the different aspects of every music video examples I mention.
In concert In concert videos are where the band pretend to be acting live in concert for their video.
In the video for OutKasts Hey Ya! it is designed to look like they are going out on stage to a huge crowd of adoring and screaming fans on live TV in a time where television was still in black and white showing families watching them play and getting excited and getting up to dance. The video also cuts to the beat and has long close ups of the band to help promote them and a features some obvious lip syncing this is meant to make the band look loved and that they have loads of fans very crazy about them. for example in this scene a woman is dragged off stage for running at the bands singer.
As live footage sAs live footage are where the performer is shown completing an actual live show.
In this music video the heavy are featured on the late show with David Letterman, the camera moves to show whoever is singing when the bands main singer is singing we are shown close ups of him and when the entire band join in we are shown a shot with all of them in and if the backup singers or extra musicians chip in the camera goes to them. The video also has a lot of sweeping camera movements going over and around the band.
animation Some animated videos will use digital animation and some others like in the case of my example will use stop motion.
In the video for primus' The Devil Went Down To Georgia stop motion animation is used to tell the story of the devil looking for a soul to steal and finding a man playing a fiddle, the devil challenges the man to a fiddling contest with the wager being his soul if he loses and a golden fiddle if he wins. The animation is fascinating and grabs your attention very quickly.
narrative Narrative music videos tell a short story.
In the video for The Staves "black and white" it shows us the reaction of a news anchor finding out that her co anchor husband has cheated on her, and their argument about it while they are live on air.
this sets up a strong narrative right away with the first scene where she is told by about her husbands bad deeds by a co worker and the audience immediately understands the situation going into the song.
interpretive Some interpretive music videos are about audience interpretation where the audience draws their own conclusions from the visuals and sometimes they are about production interpretation which is where the video shows exactly whats happening in the lyrics.
In the lonely islands video "threw it on the ground" the singer Andy Samberg sings about being handed different things and his general disgust at the these actions to the point that he says the name of the song "I threw it on the ground" this sentence is used a lot and whenever it is said the item being mentioned is shown being thrown on the ground. For example "Some poser hands me cake at a birthday party, What you want me to do with this eat it? I threw it on the ground" followed by the images shown below
Impressionist An Impressionist video tries to create feelings in its viewers through sometimes unconventional imagery that may or may not be related to the lyrics.
The video for Moby-wait for me follows a day in the life of a man in a video game with a marriage and job on thin ice, everything in his day goes wrong as he avoids the typical obstacles in a video game he is attacked and fights his way to his work where he is promptly fired by his boss who he then fights with and accidentally kills him he is shocked by what hes done and jumps out of a window to escape. He is then mugged and beaten and brought home to his wife by a police officer, once he is home however his wife tells him shes leaving and he takes a moment before going up his bedroom and in a few seconds his the final video game life breaks in two and its game over. This can be interpreted as him choosing to take his own life or his heart breaking from his grief, either way it is a strong music video that creates a lot of sadness and empathy in the viewer.
Surrealist surrealistic music videos are extremely abstract and feature content that may have no relation to music at all and often use a mixture of animation and live action to create surreal and strange effects.
In the red hot chili peppers music video other side it features the band using over sized strings and telephone lines to play, fights with dragons, abstract and oddly shaped buildings and cars this creates a strange and hard to understand for example there is a part where one of the band is fighting his own shadow.
Pastiche pastiche is parody of a style or artist usually done showing respect towards the artist.
In lady GaGas video Alejandro she often references a song by madonna called vogue in which the singer is in black and white wearing black clothing and dark lighting, lady gaga has a similar style for her video.
Parody Is work created to directly imitate, make fun of and copy the style of another author.
In the music video "word crimes" by Weird Al it directly parodies and references the original song he parodies, blurred lines for example in the beginning of both songs they both have bold text with a hashtag.
Influence commercials
In the video for coldplays adventure of a lifetime it features the beats pill speaker this is an obvious advertisement for the product inside the music video.
Introduction Music videos emerged as short videos to be watched through a new invention called the panoram soundie a jukebox that played short video clips while playing music. Then Hollywood started creating music centered films such as the famous Elvis Presley movies this films integrate songs into the film just like a music video. Its very disputed who made the first ever proper music video some people believe it was queen with the video for bohemian rhapsody and many other people believe it was the Beatles who at the height of their fame couldn't make it to every show that wanted them so supposedly would record videos of them singing and send them to shows to play. In this essay i will be going through the creation and purpose of music videos.
Promotion for artists and directors
Music videos can promote artists by heavily including them singing, their names, logos and other things associated with them. For directors they can have their name added in as credits at the start or end of the video to show people watching that they directed the video which will in turn get them more work and make them more recognizable and known. The director and artist will get even more promotion if the video is interesting and memorable such as the video for the hives video for hate to say i told you so where the artists get promotion by having their name and logo on their instruments and in the video it only shows the artists playing so they are the only thing the viewer has to think about and therefore the only thing the viewer will take away from the video. For the director to be promoted they will have to make a very good video that will grab attention and make people looking for a director want to find out who created it. A good example of promotion from a music video is the music video to thriller directed by John Landis featuring his name in the credits at the beginning when you consider that thriller was the most expensive music video ever made at the time and has 385,291,675 views on YouTube alone it would of gained him more promotion than anyone could of imagined.
Producer strategies-artist marketing
Producers market artists differently because an artists image can be what makes them appealing for example many attractive artists make their videos sexual and provocative because "sex sells". Also producers will encourage artists to release free media widely to get themselves out there and once they are more well known and have a large fan base the producer will start to promote music that will make money for them and the artist. Put simply when you're unknown content is made free and put everywhere once you are well known content is exclusive and costs money. Also some artists can afford to have big name actors in there videos such as Elton John with his video I want love featuring Robert Downey Jr the well known actor would attract extra attention to the video.
extending artists and record labels income
Mainstream artists are able to have there work played almost everywhere, so they will receive extended income from live shows, radio, TV, YouTube and spotify with their music and videos being played or watched through these media outlets they receive income from many different areas. A lesser known and non mainstream artist would not be featured on TV or radio and might not even be able to be featured on spotify which limits their exposure and income. Such as the videos below which are featured on all of the different media outlets previously mentioned.
The extension of various media outlets
The growing number of different media outlets means that there is now so many ways for up and coming artists to release their work such as on the internet through things like YouTube and spotify, On television through music video channels like MTV or on radio. The advantages of there being more media outlets is that the customer is able to listen to music in many different places in many different ways and the artist makes more money as their songs are played on various media outlets creating more royalties for them.
Synergistic marketing
Synergistic marketing is when two brand names trying to promote themselves work together or are featured in each others products to create a higher number of people seeing them to create promotion for both. For example the converse went to gorillaz creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and asked them to design a shoe for them featuring gorillaz style artwork. After this the as part of the converse three artists one song campaign converse convinced Albarn to work with two other artists to create the song "Do Ya Thing" this video is a great example of synergistic marketing because it not only promotes the three artists involved in the creation of the video but in the video converse products and logos are heavily featured promoting them as well. In synergistic marketing two companies can also completely share all of there resources and try to help each over overcome their weaknesses.
Conclusion
I think music videos are popular because the video with the music helps to create intrigue, story and keep peoples attention. Also if someone doesn't like your song they may like your music video and watch it for that reason. Music videos popularity grows so quickly and sustain themselves so well because people are attracted to them because of good visuals and will watch the videos over and over whenever they want to listen to the song making money every time someone watches them.
